I am honestly dying to know whose idea it was at 4Kids to take a one-off line from the very first episode about Grandpa’s “heart” being “in the cards” (meaning they had sentimental value for him in contrast to Kaiba) and expand that into some kind of series-spanning religion
Ironically, the more I learn about his work history, I’m beginning to think it was Eric Stuart who made a lot of decisions like that. Which… just makes the entire dub all that much more hilarious.
IIRC, Stuart was never supposed to do any voice acting for Yugioh. He was doing directing and happened to be short a Kaiba actor, so he was like “k, I’ll try it I guess” and that, kids, is how I met your mother
